TRINITY ISE LEVELS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Trinity ISE levels and the digital scale, from lowest to highest

The colour deepens as English proficiency increases. In the paper-based exam, Trinity identifies qualifications from A2 to C2 as Foundation and with Roman numerals—ISE I, ISE II, ISE III and ISE IV. In ISE Digital, a score from 0 to 150 determines the level achieved; the figure in each block shows where that level begins on Trinity College London's official scale.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE EXAM

Before you enrol,
make sure everything is clear

They are the official names of the paper-based exam levels: ISE I corresponds to CEFR B1, ISE II to B2 and ISE III to C1.

It has two modules: Reading & Writing and Speaking & Listening. Both modules at the same level must be passed to receive the full ISE qualification.

They indicate the result achieved in each skill. Pass confirms the level has been achieved; Merit and Distinction reflect stronger performance within that level.

For traditional ISE, you choose a specific level in advance and take written and spoken modules. ISE Digital is computer-based and adaptive, and determines the level achieved from A1 to C2.

It takes approximately 105 minutes, including the initial level check and instructions: Speaking 15 minutes, Listening 20, Reading 20 and Writing 40.

The result combines a score from 0 to 150 with the CEFR level achieved. The scale above shows where each level from A1 to C2 begins.

A Trinity certificate does not expire and remains valid for life as evidence of the result achieved. Some universities, employers or public bodies may require recent certification.
